The 114th International Women’s Day commemoration organized by the Revolutionary Existence for Human Development (RED) on March 9, 2025, near the Katunayake Free Trade Zone in Sri Lanka. The event, held at the Hotel Dilshan Auditorium in Kovinna, was attended by over 200 participants, including members from the Northern Province, showcasing unity and resilience among working women from both the North and South of the country. The celebration began with a 1.5-kilometer road march from Awariyawattha Junction to Kovinna, symbolizing solidarity and collective action.
The theme of the event, “Empowering All Women for Equality,” highlighted RED’s ongoing efforts to advocate for the rights of women in the garment sector, particularly young women, single mothers, and widows. Key issues addressed included the demand for a living wage, job security, and social protection systems. A significant resolution passed during the event was the submission of a request letter with one thousand signatures to various authorities, including the President, urging the establishment of a daycare center in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone. This initiative aims to support working mothers by providing a safe space for their children, enabling them to work without concern.
The event featured speeches from prominent figures, including Ms. Chandra Devanarayana, the executive directress, who elaborated on the aims and objectives of International Women’s Day. Veteran women’s social activist Sis. Hemamali Abayarathna delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of women’s empowerment and equality. The official ceremony was followed by entertainment, with participants engaging in singing and dancing, fostering a sense of community and celebration.
Overall this event underscores RED’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and equality, particularly in the garment industry. The event not only celebrated the achievements of women but also highlighted ongoing challenges and the need for systemic changes to support working women, particularly in terms of childcare and labor rights. The participation of women from diverse regions and the unanimous agreement on key resolutions reflect a strong collective effort toward achieving gender equality and empowerment.
