In 2019 RED launch a program with the aim of creating healthy atmosphere for the workers who are living in and around of Katunayake Biyagama and Wathupitiwella Free Trade Zones because it was identified there were number of environmental issues prevailed there which has a direct impact to the workers’ lives including drinking water for them who are living in the private boarding houses located close proximity to the zone ( Factory areas ) Accordingly, we started our campaign with a slogan of Proper factory waste disposal system has to be in place and supply a drinking water scheme for the zonal workers without further delay.
We organized a number of activities including awareness programs, pocket meetings at the boarding houses, publicity campaigns with the participation of large numbers of workers majority of them were women workers and through all these, we were able to bring the attention of the authorities for this overwhelming problem.
We are happy to inform as a result of our (RED ) campaign we were able to get a letter from the presidential secretariat that the matter has been well noted by the authorities and such a drinking water scheme will be implement without further delay. <
Even though we had a big hope Due to COVID 19 epidemic the process of implementation of this scheme delayed and but we (RED) will follow up the matter and continue our campaign We thank all who assisted us for this endure especially the chief monk of Katunayake awariwettha temple who donated a land block to build such huge a water tank from his temple premises.
