Nature of the Organization:

“RED” is a nonprofit Organization working in island wide including Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, which is dedicated to empower Women , women workers (Widows, Divorced women, single mothers abandoned with children) who are especially working in the free trade zones. We organized them to win their rights and claim their due ownerships and social dignity. Red develop their minds to pay more attention to health and education of their children with positive attitudes and encouraging and motivating these women to take skillful leadership in building a better society in addition to uplift their living and working conditions .

History of Organization:

In 2018 October Chandra Deveranarayana who was broken away from one of the traditional women organization due to principle issues formed the revolutionary existence of human development with her colleagues with an intention to work against all kind of repression , oppression , exploitation . sexual harassment of women workers especially the widows , single mothers and migrant women workers working in the free Trade Zones who has no voices. In addition we worked all the environmental issues directly effect to the Free trade Zonal workers .

But our major problem was the lack of resources epically the financial capacity of the organization and in this difficult initial scenario the women fund Asia gave an individual fund to Chandra and we were able to do lot including fight for environmental justice especially in the FTZs for drinking water issue because of the water pollution in the Katunayake FTZ area due to factories waste water. There we were able to get a commitment from the government to supply drinking water scheme but we could not get the fruits out of it because of the corona epidemic infected all over the country (The letter from the government can be send if necessary) and this was not implemented up to today .

Our name really flag on the Corona Epidemic time .During the Corona peak period Sri Lanka the whole country lock down and as a result of that the internal migrant workers in the FTZ s (Katunayake , Biyagame , Wathupitiwella ) become destitute because of this sudden shut down they become prisoners in their boarding houses no food or money and can’t go to their villages.

There the RED started relief services by providing food , and other needs to this victim workers who denied their salaries and in addition we provided legal aid to the workers who were terminate their services , mass layoffs because some employers used this opportunity to hunt the worker leaders who seems as trouble makers under the pretext of Corona by saying no orders . ( Some case are being heard in labour courts )

Today we are a membership organization consist around 200 members and now we are agitating to get a social security system for the private sector workers to face such disaster and for that we are educating, organizing workers specially with a concern of widows and single mother s as it fit to our vision and mission

We are continue our struggle till we reach to our goals.
