Psychological First Aid Program for Community Members ( Psychosocial Clinic )

The main objective of this training was to increase awareness of psychological well-being by providing education on psychological first aid to community members. The aim was to equip participants with the skills necessary to address psychological distress and improve community health.

Purpose of the Program To ensure the availability of psychosocial first aid in the community for a healthier society.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a crucial tool to address basic needs and reduce psychological distress. The training focused on helping participants understand stress reactions and develop coping strategies to enhance resilience in personal and community settings. It also introduced participants to methods for providing emotional support and referring individuals to appropriate professional services when necessary.

Training Outcomes and Feedback

  • All participants actively engaged in the training and shared their views during group exercises.
  • Participants gained basic psychological knowledge and the ability to identify psychiatric symptoms.
  • They learned about mental and physical health, healthy living, and where to seek mental health support within the district.
  • Key issues such as community socio-social problems were identified and discussed.
  • Participants were trained in the basics of psychological first aid and maintained good communication throughout.

Actions Taken

  • Participants were referred for befriending and counseling.
  • Some were referred to the Mental Health Team at DGH Vavuniya.
  • Others were directed to the Social Service Department at the District Secretariat in Vavuniya.
