The first session of a six-month Training of Trainers workshop aimed at eliminating domestic violence took place on 09 th June 2024 at the RED office premises in Katunayake.
A group of 30 young women, including single mothers, widows, and women vulnerable to domestic violence in the Free Trade Zone, was selected for the workshop. The session focused on raising awareness about the practical and theoretical aspects of domestic violence, the existing laws, and tools available to protect victims.
Sub-inspector Kalyani Subasingha, the officer in charge of the Women and Child Care Bureau at the local police station in Katunayake, conducted a comprehensive session. She served as a resource person, providing valuable insights into the issue.
Notably, 10 male participants were also invited to the workshop, recognizing that domestic violence affects not only females but males as well. Additionally, many perpetrators in domestic violence cases are male.
At the end of the session, all participants expressed their commitment to ending domestic violence by supporting their colleagues, neighbors in factories, and the wider society. They also expressed a desire to learn more.
